Coach Bill Shea
In the fall of 1975 I entered freshmen year at Bishop Connolly High School an all-boys Catholic school in Fall River, MA. It was the WORST athlete year of my life, I sat BENCH. I averaged 2 pts a game… TWO! I also struggled to get time in baseball as well but basketball was my passion. I GOT TO WORK! Long story short… sophomore year I STARTED VARSITY… all-star player my junior year… graduated with record for career points, points in a season, and points in a game! I was able to do that because I understood the basics of competition and how it works. I understood because my father taught me the basics of competition:
Coaches want to win
BEST PLAYERS PLAY
To be the best you must practice on your own.
I came back to Connolly to coach freshmen basketball in 1985 before becoming varsity coach in 1990. In my 30 years I have seen players overachieve and sadly many players underachieve or quit. The most common factor is competitive mentality. Competitive mentality is what got me through that miserable freshmen year. But more importantly competitive mentality is what pushed me to TAKE ACCOUNTABILITY AND TAKE ACTION.
